How we keep computers patched and close vulnerabilities

Last reviewed:

Summary

We patch managed Windows computers every week, and Mac patching is available when you need it. We review failed installs, computers that have stopped checking in and new vulnerabilities daily.

Which updates do we install each week?

Operating system updates and third-party app updates go out weekly. Your computers receive an update a few days after release.

Our own computers and test machines receive it first. This lets a bad update show up on our machines before it reaches yours.

Critical updates don't wait for the weekly run. We check for them every day, and they install two days after release, without a restart. A Windows update that needs a restart takes effect the next time the computer restarts, and the weekly restart makes sure that happens.

What happens when my computer needs to restart?

You receive a restart prompt. If you do not restart, the computer restarts automatically 4 hours later.

A laptop that is offline has 6 days to check in and receive the week's updates.

How do you handle drivers, firmware and larger upgrades?

Windows computers receive a monthly approved driver update. BIOS and firmware are never pushed automatically.

Windows feature upgrades are not automatic. They go out in planned waves, and we tell you in advance.

Microsoft 365 apps update themselves. We step in when an update is stuck.

How do you catch missed updates and new vulnerabilities?

We review failed installs, computers that have stopped checking in and new vulnerabilities every day.

What are the deadlines for updates and vulnerability fixes?

Update deadlines run from release. Vulnerability deadlines run from discovery.

Why do critical updates install within 3 days?

We check for critical updates every day and install them two days after release, so an online computer has them within 3 days. The two days give a bad update time to be reported and withdrawn before it reaches you.
